What does it take to be considered "trained" by the BSA?
If you are an Assistant Scoutmaster, you must complete the following training:
- This is Scouting. This introduces new Scouters to the Boy Scouting program, and is available online.
- Youth Protection Training (must be renewed every two years). Click here for details.
- Scoutmaster / Asst Scoutmaster Position Specific Training. This is a full Saturday of training provided by the Old Dominion District.
- Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills. This is an evening of planning, followed by a Friday evening - Saturday campout training session. Also provided by the District.
If you are a Committee Member, you must complete the following (all available online):
- This is Scouting.
- Youth Protection Training (must be renewed every two years).
- Troop Committee Challenge.
How do I get trained online?
- Go to: https://myscouting.scouting.org/Pages/Home.aspx
- Log in. If you do not yet have an account, create one (you'll need your BSA membership number)
- Go to the Training tab and begin!

How do I earn the way-cool Old Goats Patrol patch and red 1853 neckerchief?
If you have completed Youth Protection Training and This is Scouting, you can earn your membership in the Old Goats Patrol by attending Troop 1853's Junior Leader Training.
